Hyundai, SOSLAB to Jointly Develop Lidar for Mobile Robots

May 18, 2022
Hyundai Motor Group and SOSLAB, which develops solid-state lidar, have announced a partnership to help expedite the development of mobile robots. The companies will jointly develop 3D lidar for mobile robots that optimizes autonomous driving performance and aims to commercialize a new mobility platform for applications such as delivery services.
Smart Optical Sensors Lab (SOSLAB) develops solid-state lidar sensors for industrial and automotive use cases. Compared to conventional mechanical lidar, the SOSLAB lidar sensors have strengths in size, weight, power consumption, price, and durability, the company said.
The joint development will help promote a high-resolution 3D lidar for autonomous driving performance operation for Hyundai Motor Group’s Mobile Eccentric Droid (MobED), which it announced earlier this year at CES. The two companies said they will cooperate on this project over the next two years.
Hyundai said it will provide hardware design and software algorithms with its robotics technologies, and SOSLAB will offer advanced 3D high-resolution lidar design technologies and its knowledge on software technology. The goal is to develop an autonomous-driving mobile robot that can move more stably on irregular surfaces and in between obstacles by expanding the short-distance recognition range, while also reducing the lidar sensor size.
“With 3D lidar optimized to Hyundai Motor Group’s mobile robot, we will take a step closer to commercializing the compact mobility platform of autonomous driving, which can drive freely in complicated indoor and outdoor spaces,” said Dong Jin Hyun, head of Hyundai Motor Group Robotics Lab. “By doing so, we will be able to introduce a range of new businesses and services, including delivery service and personal mobility.”
“[The] robotics industry ultimately aims to improve people’s lives by bringing about innovation in the mobility market,” said Ji-seong Jeong, CEO of SOSLAB. “For its realization, we will supply safe and accurate high-resolution 3D lidar sensors that are optimized for the robotics industry.”
