Universal Robots to Demonstrate Piece-Picking, Mixed-Case Palletizing at MODEX

March 22, 2022
Universal Robots announced several demonstrations and events it plans to showcase at next week’s MODEX 2022 event in Atlanta, including how collaborative robots (aka cobots) can help warehouses with piece-picking and mixed-case palletizing tasks for operations that are continuing to struggle with labor shortages.
Along with RightHand Robotics, Universal’s UR5e cobot powers the RightPick 3 robot system, which offers system integrators and warehouse operators an item-handling solution for use with AutoStore, AS/RS systems and other standard material handling automation. The company will demonstrate the system at the RightHand Robotics booth.
At its own booth, Universal will demonstrate a mixed-case depalletizing application, developed with its partner Mujin, showcasing a UR10e cobot. “Collaborative robots have completely changed the way industry utilizes robotics,” said Josh Cloer, director of sales at Mujin. “UR brings flexibility, ease-of-use and ready-to-deploy tools making it simple for manufacturers to automate nearly any repetitive task.” Cloer added that Mujin’s advanced 3D vision and real-time motion planning technologies can automate the deployment of difficult applications like mixed-case handling, sorting and order filling.
UR said it also will feature a UR16e model with a 16kg (35.3 lbs) payload, palletizing and depalletizing in a conveyor setting, using UR’s built-in palletizing programming wizard in integration with the FXCB gripper from Schmalz.
Joe Campbell, senior manager of applications development at UR, will be speaking on the topic of “The Labor Challenge in Manufacturing Just Won’t Go Away” on March 28 at 11 a.m. “… despite wage increases, logistics operations are still having a very hard time and retaining frontline workers,” said Campbell. “To fill that void, we’re now experiencing significant industry demand for robotic piece-picking and palletizing processes that support a wide range of products.”
UR said it would also have cobots on display at the Mech-Mind booth and SVT Robotics booth at the show.
