Cambridge Mechatronics Ltd. (CML), which develops shape memory alloy (SMA) actuators, has announced a new ultra-slim, high-precision rotary actuator. The new actuator includes a lightweight design, 2,000 step positions per revolution, and is completely non-magnetic so it can operate in areas of high magnetic flux that might otherwise exclude conventional motor technologies. With a low profile of around 1 mm, the new actuator can be used in most space-constrained applications.
The company said its design is based on CML’s proprietary, patented SMA actuator platform technology, which has already shipped in tens of millions of cameras in smartphones and other consumer electronics products. This is the first of a series of new products being developed to bring the benefits of SMA into new markets and applications, CML said.
This can include areas such as miniature robotics, drones, micro-fluidics, micro medical devices, and precision optomechanics. Powered by a low voltage power supply and using industry standard I2C communications, the actuator is flexible and straightforward to design into new or existing systems.
CML said full specifications of the rotary actuator are available in a datasheet, including details of the CML driver IC, which has been optimized for the application. An advanced technology demonstrator will be available in January.
