Orbbec Announces Availability of Femto ToF 3D Cameras

Michigan-based Orbbec, which develops 3D camera technologies, has announced it is shipping its line of Femto 3D cameras, time-of-flight (ToF) models that enable the capturing of the exact position and shape of static or moving objects and scenes with high accuracy. The Femto line offers solutions for designers in healthcare, warehousing/shipping, autonomous robotics and augmented reality, along with other applications.

Orbbec said its Femto lineup gives developers, engineers, researchers and hobbyists the ability to customize a ToF solution for their particular application. The new line includes three different models:

  • Femto, which features the greatest optical range in the family, from 0.2 to 5 meters. The Femto original delivers a depth resolution of 640 by 480 pixels at 30 frames per second, and requires the lowest power consumption (average 5.8W) in a 99.4 by 68 by 25 mm form factor.
  • Femto W, which includes the widest depth field of view (horizontal 90 degrees, vertical 74 degrees) and highest color field of view (H98.6, V64.2), along with high accuracy identification at closer ranges (0.2 to 2.5 meters).
  • Femto Live, the family’s midrange option (0.5 to 3 meters), with color resolution of up to 3,840 by 2,160 pixels at 30 frames per second.

Orbbec said all three cameras offer multi-camera synchronization support with near-zero latency, and can also be used in complete darkness. The three cameras also support 6-axis Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) motion tracking, providing position sensing for robots or other devices on the move. The lineup also includes depth engine-equipped cameras that release large volumes of computing power to the host PC – which Orbbec said many ToF cameras to not currently provide.

“Time of Flight technology has become one of the hottest and most exciting fields in 3D imaging,” said David Chen, co-founder and chief technology officer of Orbbec. “ToF-based 3D cameras can measure shapes, movement and position of static or moving objects with pinpoint accuracy. Our new Femto line gives users a range of state-of-the-art solutions and can do so in industrial quantities.”

The company said Femto can also track human forms, measure small live objects, perform obstacle avoidance and recognize gestures, and can be used for industrial automation tasks in addition to robotics.
