Orbbec, which develops 3D camera technologies, has announced the availability of its new Persee+, a 3D camera computer that brings artificial intelligence capabilities to the camera by adding onboard computing capability. With a specialized hardware accelerator for AI and machine learning applications, the Persee+ aims to provide a new level of advanced users for 3D imaging for researchers, engineers and hobbyists.
Leading the upgrades in the Persee+ is an Amlogic A311D processor, which provides significant increased performance. The smart vision system-on-chip (SOC) unit includes four ARM A73 cores and two ARM A53 cores plus a neural processing unit (NPU) capability for AI inference.
Other improvements include a higher 3D imaging capability of Orbeck’s Astra+ structured light camera, with an RGB resolution up to 1,920 by 1,080 pixels at 30 frames per second. In addition, the Wi-Fi connectivity has been upgraded to the latest standards, storage has been increased to 4GB of RAM and 32GB of eMMC storage to more adequately support user code, with the addition of a MicroSD storage card slot for even more storage.
“AI and machine learning applications have put increasing demands on both software and hardware,” said David Chen, co-founder and chief technology officer of Orbbec. “The Persee+ is the first 3D camera computer to respond with an onboard neural processing capability. Our new product is a huge innovation that will facilitate multiple uses in robotics, security systems, healthcare and other fields.”
Orbbec said the Persee+ is also engineered to accommodate several environmental and technical needs. The 3D camera has a sensing range of 0.6 to 0.8 meters, and can operate in temperatures from 0 degrees Celsius to 40 degrees Celsius. The computer supports both Android and Linux operating systems, as well as HDMI, Bluetooth 5.0 and RJ45 Gigabit Ethernet connectivity.
