Berkshire Grey, the maker of AI-enabled robotic solutions for automating supply chains, has announced the launch of its AI-powered Robotic Shuttle Put Wall (RSPW), aimed at e-commerce order fulfillment. The RSPW is an automated put wall that can increase capacity and throughput through robotic automation.

The RSPW uses a robotic shuttle to deliver picked items to individual cubby walls, eliminating the need for a worker to walk to and from a picking station. Instead, a stationary worker can place order items into the RSPW shuttle, saving time during the fulfillment process.

In addition, Berkshire Grey said its RSPW can offer additional features and benefits:

  • The system can accommodate up to nearly 100% of typical SKU items, including more challenging items such as soft polybags, cylinders/tubes (such as those used for makeup), and industries such as apparel, footwear, beauty and general merchandise.
  • Customer order sortation throughput can increase up to 300% with the solution’s high-capacity put wall. Sort locations can handle up to 240 orders at the same time, as opposed to an industry average of 80 orders via manual put walls.
  • The RSPW can integrate with a company’s existing fulfillment process without disrupting ongoing operations.
  • The system can improve upstream batch inventory pick rates by up to 33%.
  • The solution can support the needs of a 24/7 order fulfillment operation, and provide flexibility by integrating with other processes, including robotic, conveyor, and manual-based transport.

“E-commerce continues to grow and surge,” said Tom Wagner, founder and CEO at Berkshire Grey. “Our automation enables retailers to increase capacity to meet the growing demand and helps to deliver efficient revenue growth. Berkshire Grey’s AI-enabled Robotic Shuttle Put Wall is built on proven technology deployed by customers today. This new platform increases order processing speeds, optimizes the fulfillment workforce, and most importantly gets more orders out the door more quickly.”

“Businesses will continue to see e-commerce orders rise as global e-commerce sales expect to approach $5 trillion by the end of 2021,” said Kevin Prouty, an analyst at IDC. “This growth in volume, combined with labor scarcity, is putting tremendous pressure on supply chain operations to increase fulfillment throughput and support a broad selection of products. Businesses have no choice but to automate.”
